The Root Cause of Global Pollution

The Root Cause of Global Pollution

The Root Cause of Global Pollution

We live in a world that has a throw away mentality. Things are made to be thrown away. Packaging for common household products (toothpaste, laundry detergent, canned foods), are made to be thrown away. Large products like furniture, building supplies and consumer electronics are also destined for generally short lifespan followed by a trip to the trash bin.

This throw away mentality, whether it was created by corporations with planned obsolescence, advertisers creating the desire to have the new and improved version or consumers driven by peer pressure to keep up with our friends and neighbors, this throw away mentality has been woven into the fabric of our global culture. Unfortunately, it extends beyond mere products and into human relations.

What may have started out as a desire to make things bigger and better has evolved into an overall approach to life in general? People are now looking beyond products and looking at relationships with others living beings as throw away as well.

People are throwing away their pets. They get a pet, the pet doesn’t conform to what they expected and they give it to the pound, throw it out of the house or drive it to another town or the middle of nowhere and let it go. In the past week friends have told me about two families, one who were going on vacation and didn’t want to spend money to board their seven year old dog, so they brought it to the dog pound. The other family dropped their eleven year old dog off at the vet to be euthanized on their way to Disneyland. The left it up to the Vet staff to help the poor animal overcome the feeling of abandonment as they gave it a lethal injection, while they enjoyed a ride on the Pirates of The Caribbean.

People are also throwing away their relationships with other people. Friendships end just when the friend is in need. Romantic relationships end when one partner discovers a flaw in the other or because the two parties are arguing. Marriages end because people don’t have the time or desire to work on their relationship. In some nations 50% of all marriages end in divorce. When there are children involved, some parents abandon the relationship with their children out of anger or trepidation at dealing with their former partner.

The thing that most people don’t think about when they are practicing a throw away mentality is that thrown away doesn’t mean problem solved. Thrown away means the problem is taken from the sight of the one doing the throwing and left for someone else to take care of. The items we throw away go to landfills. Pollute the ocean or just hang around until they are, little by little disintegrated over a period of years. The relationships we throw away produce traumatized animals and broken people. Until we as individuals and humanity as a race begin to change our way of thinking we will continue to throw away things, animals and people until we become something less than human. Next time you are throwing away something, be it a product, a pet or a relationship with another person, think about where the throw away will really end up and how much pain it will cause the human family.
